Benign Paroxysmal Positional Dizziness (BPPD): What is it and how can chiropractic help?

What is BPPD?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Dizziness, or BPPD for short, is one of the most common causes of vertigo. It is characterized by short, intense bouts of dizziness that occur with specific head movements, such as looking up, rolling over in bed, or tilting the head. This condition is caused by tiny crystals, known as otoliths, that come loose in the inner ear. When these crystals end up in the wrong parts of the vestibular system, they interfere with the signals sent to the brain, leading to the feeling of dizziness.

Fortunately, although the name may sound serious, BPPD is not dangerous. However, it can have a significant impact on daily life and lead to uncertainty, nausea and, in some cases, falls. Fortunately, it is treatable.

How chiropractic can help with BPPD

Chiropractic offers an effective and safe approach to treating BPPD. At Cornerstone Chiropractie, we always start with a thorough intake and examination to make sure that your dizziness is the result of BPPD and not another condition, such as inflammation of the vestibular system, migraines or a neurological disorder.

Through specific tests, such as the Dix-Hallpike test, we can diagnose BPPD. If the diagnosis is confirmed, we'll apply a tried and tested technique known as the Epley Maneuver. This technique helps to return the detached crystals to their original position, causing the symptoms to disappear.

Is BPPD Dangerous?

While BPPD can be annoying and sometimes scary, it is not life threatening. The biggest risk is that a vertigo attack disrupts your balance, which can lead to falls, especially in older adults. That is why rapid and effective treatment is essential.

What happens during treatment?

The Epley maneuver is a gentle and controlled procedure where we position your head in specific positions to move the crystals in your inner ear. Treatment is usually quick and effective, with many patients noticing improvement after just one session. Sometimes, however, several sessions are necessary depending on the severity of the symptoms.

Post-treatment advice

After the Epley maneuver, it is important to follow a few simple guidelines to ensure that the crystals don't move out of place again:

  • Avoid lying on the affected side for 48 hours.
  • Try not to lie flat; sleep in a half-sitting position, for example with extra pillows.
  • Avoid rapid head movements, such as turning or tilting your head suddenly.
  • Be careful when doing daily activities, such as driving, stooping, or exercising.

By following these recommendations, you give your vestibular system the opportunity to stabilise and promote recovery.

Although BPPD is not always preventable, at Cornerstone Chiropractie, we can help with additional advice to minimise the risk of recurring complaints. This can include targeted exercises, posture correction and lifestyle advice.
